The traditional bonfires of San Juan in Alicante

In June we celebrated the festival of San Juan. It’s one of our best tratidional festivals every year.

The Festival of San Juan dates back to pre-Christian times and marks the arrival of the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. We usually celebrate this festival all over Spain but especially in coastal regions where many people enjoy the beach culture, build bonfires and party throughout the night.

Alicante is one of the best cities in Spain to celebrate San Juan. Here it is known as ‘Las Hogueras de San Juan’ (Bonfires of St John) and the celebrations take place from 20th to 29th in June. In the city of Alicante there are large wooden and papier maché figures (they are very similar to ‘Las Fallas’ in Valencia) which are displayed in the city’s main squares and are burnt down on the night of San Juan on June 24th. The burning begins at midnight once a palm tree shaped firework display has been released from Alicante Castle.

I have tons of pictures about those large wooden and papier maché figures in Alicante. They are awesome, huge and very very artistic masterpieces. It was a wonderful experience.
